Wyoming's public education
has long been excellent. The University of Wyoming (in
Laramie) is the only four-year college in the state, but it offers several
degree programs in cooperation with Casper College (www.cc.whecn.edu),
which is centrally located in the state -- two hours drive from
Thermopolis.
The State's Junior College system is a
good one, comprised of six colleges strategically located around the
state. Those at Powell (www.nwc.whecn.edu)
and Riverton (www.cwc.whecn.edu) are relatively close to
Thermopolis. Transfer, occupational, community service, and adult
education programs are offered.
Total enrollment in the Thermopolis/Hot
Springs County School District (September, 1999) is 825. The
district includes Hot Springs County High School (295 students),
Thermopolis Middle School, Lucerne Intermediate, and Ralph Witters
Elementary. Thermopolis High School students consistently score
above state and national means on standardized tests.
Thermopolis is also the home of the Big
Horn Basin Children's Center, a K-12 residential school for medically
fragile or emotionally disturbed students. There are also special
programs for children with educational or developmental issues.
